I first met Dan in 1972 when he lived in Racine. Once met - never forgotten. My next meeting was probably in 1975 at JFK Prep. We we sitting together in the kitchen and I said something to Dan about coming to teach there - he had just returned from Korea and was there in part to visit with his co-Peace Corps worker, Greg, who was teaching at Prep. Dan replied with his expression filled smile that, "No, I've been to the mountain and cannot return!" (that's my best recollection for this 41 year old memory.
Well Dan did return to teach there and we were able to deepen our relationship. He was a dear friend to both my wife Clare and I AND he loved to take our infant son, Elisha , by the heels and parade him up and down the dining area for the priests, brothers and faculty announcing that he was "Batboy". We later laughed that Elisha was never the same after this!!!
We loved seeing Dan and going out to eat with him whenever we were in Milwaukee. This was always an adventure in teasing the waiter or waitress with a barrage of questons which inevitaby led to laughter, their endearment to him and us having a boisterous night of food - usually some sort of ethnic fare - and fun.
Dan's sincere intelligence never hovered above his warmth. The scholarly efforts throughout his adult life always left me humbled but glad to be able to share in discussions with him.
My love to all of his family, conferes and friends - literally throughout the world.
