Obituary for Virginia R. Horbinski

Virginia R. Horbinski
Age 86, of Sister Bay, WI was Born to Eternal Life on April 17, 2017. She loved and was married to the late Richard Horbinski for 66 years.

Virginia was the daughter of William and Margaret Zastrow. She grew up on the banks of the Wisconsin River in the village of Merrimac among the rolling hills and bluffs of the Baraboo Range. After finishing school, she moved to Milwaukee to work for Capital Airlines where she served as ticket agent. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Richard.

While raising her four daughters, she was the school secretary at Oriole Lane Elementary (Mequon) and volunteered as a Girl Scout leader. She then worked as secretary to the president of Metropolitan Savings and Loan (Thiensville). In short order, she became a mortgage loan officer and worked in that capacity until she retired to Northern Door County in 1991. That was the beginning of Virginia’s and Richard’s career in home building. After building and remodeling several individual homes, she and Richard purchased 100 acres in Sister Bay and built a beautiful subdivision of single family dwellings.

Virginia loved spending time with her family and enjoyed travel. She was a voracious reader, and in 1948, assisted noted Wisconsin author August Derleth on the book Sac Prairie People. Hers was a rich and happy life. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.

She is survived by four daughters: Sharon (Tom) Krueger of West Bend, WI; Debra (Greg) Hageman of New Holstein, WI; Catherine Yohnk of Mequon, WI; and Joan (Rick) Gordon of Fish Creek, WI. She is further survived by five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and a brother William (Joyce) Zastrow of Clare, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter Marilyn, her brother Marion, and her sister Shirley Matz.

Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Wednesday, April 19 at Casperson Funeral Home, 10708 N. Bay Shore Drive, Sister Bay, WI. Services to be held Saturday, April 22 at Lumen Christi Parish, 2750 W. Mequon Rd., Mequon, WI. Visitation at 11:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 pm. Burial to follow at Lumen Christi Cemetery.
